About Our Candles

No. We intentionally leave our candles free from added dyes and artificial colourants. Pure soy wax has a naturally soft, creamy tone that reflects our commitment to simplicity and clean performance. By avoiding unnecessary additives, we preserve the integrity of the wax, ensure a consistent burn, and allow the fragrance to shine, beautifully and authentically.

Every Lu Lights candle is made with 100% soy wax, a natural cotton wick, and premium fragrance oils. We use glass jars with fitted lids in three finishes — clear, frosted, and black — with lid options in bamboo, gold, and silver.

Soy wax is a plant-based, renewable wax that burns cleaner and cooler than paraffin. It produces significantly less soot, lasts longer, and holds fragrance better. That means you’ll enjoy a more consistent scent experience from start to finish. It is also biodegradable and better for your home environment. You can read more on our About page. Read More

Yes — every Lu Lights candle is hand-poured in small batches. We do not use automated production lines. Each candle is made by hand and checked before it leaves our studio.

Our 300ml soy wax candles offer an estimated burn time of approximately 40 to 50 hours. Actual burn time depends on how you care for your candle, particularly wick trimming and the length of each burn session. See our candle care section below for tips on getting the most from your Lu Light.

At launch, we offer ten carefully selected scents: Lemongrass, Citronella, Coconut, Orange Citrus, Cranberry, Cactus Bloom, French Vanilla, Maple Bourbon, Cappuccino, Cucumber and Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, and Sandalwood. You can explore scent descriptions and choose your fragrance on our Personalise Your Candle page.

Our soy wax candles are made without paraffin or harmful additives, and we use cotton wicks free of metal cores. As with any open flame, we recommend never leaving a burning candle unattended, keeping it out of reach of children and pets, and placing it on a flat, heat-resistant surface.

We use premium fragrance oils in our candles. Please get in touch with us directly at lu@lulights.co.za if you have specific sensitivities or allergy concerns, and we will assist you before you place an order.

Candle Care

For your first burn, allow the candle to burn until the entire surface of the wax has melted to the edges of the jar. This prevents tunnelling and ensures an even burn for the life of your candle. This may take 1 to 2 hours, depending on the jar diameter.

Trim your wick to approximately 5mm before every burn. A trimmed wick produces a cleaner, steadier flame with less soot and a more even melt. Use scissors or a wick trimmer — never tear the wick by hand.

Candles need rest too! We recommend burning your candle for no longer than three to four hours at a time. Burning for too long can cause the wick to mushroom, produce excess soot, or cause the jar to overheat.

Stop burning your candle when approximately 10mm / 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Burning below this level can cause the jar to overheat. Once finished, the glass jar can be cleaned and reused — as a pen holder, a small planter, or a home décor vessel.

Soy wax is a natural product and can develop a frosted or slightly uneven surface after burning. This is completely normal and does not affect the quality or scent of your candle — it is simply a characteristic of natural soy wax.
